                                                  Environmental Development

Environmental development is NHS’ community action programming that promotes a mode of living in which resource use aims to meet human needs while ensuring the sustainability of natural systems and the environment, so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but also for generations to come.

To achieve this NHS of SI seeks to create communities that are environmentally healthy and resilient.

The Green and Healthy Homes Program is designed to promote green, healthy, safe, comfortable and energy efficient homes as well as environmentally healthy and resilient neighborhoods.  This is achieved through the following program initiative

The EnergyWise™ Staten Island helps homeowners obtain a free or low cost energy assessment of their home and provides guidance on finding incentives and the best way to pay for health, safety and energy saving home improvements.

Through Community Partnerships and Special Projects NHSSI facilitates collective community action around greening, recycling – including composting, health and safety awareness and improvement, environmental education, green block associations, creation of neighborhood sustainability strategic plans and community sustainability coalition.
