Our mission is to create and maintain sustainable resilient homes and communities.
We envision a place where families are in homes and communities that are affordable, well-designed and maintained in a manner that supports the health, safety and economic stability of residents.
Working on the premise that long-term economic vitality, environmental health, and social cohesion are necessary and interdependent; and that the health of one determines the health of all; we take an integrated approach to developing sustainable communities where the needs of the present residents are met without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own.
NHS of Staten Island provides programming that engages communities in Staten Island, for Social, Economic and Environmental transformation, development and resilience.
Social Development and Impact
Building social capital and equity refers to the norms and networks that enable people to act collectively for a better and more resilient community. NHS of Staten Island engages these networks by promoting Resident Leadership and increasing communities’ ladder of participation to be better positioned to assist in creating and maintaining clean, safe, healthy, livable, resilient and sustainable communities.
NHS of Staten Island’s efforts to create and maintain sustainable communities promote an Economic Development approach that engages a broad-based partnership of community, private, public and Third sector institutions for sustained concerted actions that promote the standard of living, economic mobility of residents and the community’s economic health. NHS of Staten Island provides several core programs that work toward this goal.
Environmental development is NHS’ community action programming that promotes a mode of living in which resource use aims to meet human needs while ensuring the sustainability of natural systems and the environment, so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but also for generations to come.
